Liberia has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios, and also very high mortality rates for newborns. In response, Africare and the University of Michigan have partnered to design, construct, and evaluate Maternity Waiting Homes, residential dwellings near health facilities where women in the late stages of pregnancy can stay to await delivery and receive care after giving birth.
