Women account for over 60 percent of all new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Most women acquire HIV/AIDS from having sex with an infected partner, most often their husband. Programs that promote marital fidelity and improve marriage communication reduce the risk of women contracting HIV within marriage. Prostitutes and intravenous drug users are at increased risk of HIV. Many of the indignities women face from sexual violence to slavery contribute to their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, so prevention strategies must be comprehensive in nature.
