Three Individuals individuals have been arrested and charged with conspiring to perform female genital mutilation (FGM) in MI. The Department of Justice notes that they are believed to be the first people charged under 18 U.S.C. 116, which criminalizes FGM. They also stress that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
