Despite the fact that FGM is illegal in the UK, this study notes that the number of women and girls living in England and Wales who are at risk of, or have already suffered from, FMG has significantly increased. The authors suggest that steps must be taken beyond simply outlawing the practice in order to protect women and girls. They argue that the education and training of health workers about FGM, training health workers on how to provide relevant information about FGM to women and girls at risk, and antenatal screening are necessary and effective means as a first-line of intervention.
