Abstract
Objective: The Pregnancy and Village Outreach Tibet (PAVOT) program, a model for community- and home-based maternal-newborn outreach in rural Tibet, is presented.
Methods: This article describes PAVOT, including the history, structure, content, and activities of the program, as well as selected program outcome measures and demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and pregnancy outcomes of women who recently participated in the program.
Dickerson, et al. assess the impact of The Pregnancy and Village Outreach Tibet (PAVOT) program, which is designed to train local healthcare workers and volunteers to educate pregnant mothers and their families about safe labor and delivery practices and early newborn care and provide mothers with safe delivery kits, newborn hats and blankets, and nutrient supplementation. The authors found that the program successfully accomplished its goal of training volunteers and distributing medical supplies. Outcomes such as changes in the maternal or neonatal mortality rate were not assessed.
