Although Afghanistan has been working to eradicate polio, neighboring Pakistan has struggled to bring the spread of the debilitating and deadly childhood disease under control. Recently, a 3 year old girl was infected with polio in Kabul, the first such case in over 12 years. The strain she contracted is common in Pakistan, where suspicion among Islamic militants has made expanding vaccination coverage among children difficult.
