In a commentary on the April 2014 meeting on water and sanitation convened by the United Nations, the editors of The Lancet provide an overview of the global scope of the challenge of improving access to clean water and sanitation. Importantly, the editors argue that interventions to improve water and sanitation must focus on women and girls in order to help countries achieve sustainable development.
