A consortium of international agencies, including the World Bank and UNICEF, estimates that the number of children dying before their fifth birthday has been cut in half. Although these are promising statistics, they fall short of Millennium Development Goal 4, which aims to cut the child mortality rate by two thirds by 2015. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of child mortality of any region, while India and Nigeria together account for one third of all childhood deaths before the age of 5.
