Girls and women experience discrimination in all aspects of a disaster. They are more likely to become casualties, less likely to receive medical, hygienic or psychological assistance, and more likely to experience violence after the disaster. Girls and women may be abandoned by the men in the family, lose their property if the husband dies, and may be coerced into sex for basic needs such as food, shelter, and security.
