Adequate care for both mom and newborn, including helping the baby maintain optimal body temperature, encouraging breast feeding, and training birth attendants in routine newborn care, can drastically improve their chance for survival. Implementing best practices in the first hour and the first 24 hours after birth is critical for survival, and training birth attendants to treat post-partum hemorrhaging can help preserve the mother’s life after a difficult delivery.
